TPACK Lesson Planning

 Topic: Numbers to 10

Class: PP

Subject: Mathematics

Duration: 45 minutes

TPACK Model:

  • Technological knowledge (TK): Use of projector and PhET simulation.
  • Pedagogical Knowledge (PK): Group work, and using manipulatives to have a hand on real experiences.
  • Content knowledge (CK): concept of numbers (including both number form and the spelling of each), and its application.

Learning Objectives;

By the end of the lesson, the child should be able to;

i. count till 10 accurately without the support of their friends ,

ii. spell out minimum of 2 numbers between 0 to 10 without anyone's help, and

iii. recognize any numbers between 0 to 10 on their own when asked randomly.

Teaching Learning Materials:

  • Interactive whiteboard or projector

  • PhET simulation

  • Manipulatives (e.g., counters, blocks)

Lesson Introduction (CK) (10 minutes)

  • Discuss the importance of numbers in everyday life and their role in counting objects and money, telling time, and more.

Lesson Development (TPCK integration) (25 minutes)

Explain what is numbers in simple terms (like numbers are used to count, measure, represent quantity, and many more)
I will project the number play simulation on the wall where they will learn the numbers to applying the 'one and one more method' along with the pictures like in the image.

Then I will introduce a game which is already designed in the PhET Colorado where the students need to count the number of pictures and tell me how many are there. Students are allowed to represent in any form to show the quantity if they are not familiar with the correct number words.

Activity 1

The class will be divided into 5 groups of maximum of six members.
The number cards (containing a number on one side of the card and the spelling of it on the back side of the card) will be distributed in each group for them to learn the spellings of the numbers. The groups will be given 5 minutes for this activity after which some students on random bases will have to say out loud the spellings of some random numbers.
The teacher will monitor the progress and provide assistance wherever necessary.
Each member in the group will have to take turns looking at the cards and familiarize with all the the spellings.

Follow up activity

I will randomly ask one person from each group to spell out two random numbers (0-10). I will correct if they cannot spell correctly.

Extended Learning Activity

For those students who are done before the time, they will play with manipulatives such as counters and blocks to count and represent numbers.

Closure (CK) (10 minutes)

Finally, i will conclude the lesson by counting numbers to 10 together with the class and then spell out the numbers from 0 to 10 one by one. I will recapitulate or remind the importance of numbers which are to count objects, money, people, and to measure the quantity and many more.
